Korea to face Thailand’s Ponpun-Whipai in quarterfinal first leg at ‘Aqu’

The South Korean women’s national volleyball team will face Thailand and Australia in the quarterfinals. Thailand has setter Ponpun Gedpard (IBK), outside hitter Wipai Sittong (Hyundai E&C), and outside hitter Apojit Tanacha (Korea Expressway Corporation), all of whom will be playing in the Korean V-League next season.

South Korea swept Uzbekistan 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-12) in the final match of Group C of the 22nd Asian Championships at Korat Chatchai Hall in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand on Monday to complete a two-match winning streak. Pyo Seung-ju and Jung Ho-young scored 16 and 13 points, respectively, while Lee Han-bi chipped in with nine points.

After suffering a 2-3 upset loss to Vietnam in the first round, South Korea defeated Chinese Taipei and Uzbekistan to finish with a 2-1 record. Vietnam advanced to the quarterfinals after finishing first in Group C with three wins.

Only the top two teams from each of the four groups advance to the quarterfinals. In Pool C, Vietnam and South Korea will face Thailand and Australia, who finished first and second in Pool A, respectively.

Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, and Australia are in Pool E for the quarterfinals. South Korea will face Thailand and Australia on March 3 and 4, respectively.

The first match of the quarterfinals will be against Thailand. Thailand also entered this year’s Asian Championship as a member of the FIVB Volleyball Nations League (VNL). Thailand is ranked 16th in the FIVB World Rankings and Korea is ranked 35th.

What’s more, the women’s team fielded only three Thai players in the Asian Quarterfinals, which was introduced for the first time in South Korea this year. All three are members of the Thai national team. Ponpun is the starting setter for Thailand. Wipai and Tanacha are substitutes, with Wipai getting more playing time this year.

South Korea is at a disadvantage after losing to Vietnam. In Group E of the quarterfinals, they will face Vietnam with the same group stage record. South Korea will enter the quarterfinals with one loss. Australia also starts with one loss. Conversely, Thailand and Vietnam enter the quarterfinals with one win.

Only the top two teams in Pools E and F will advance to the quarterfinals. Earlier, the national team set their sights on reaching the quarterfinals of the tournament. To do so, they needed a win against Vietnam, but couldn’t prevent a loss. It will be interesting to see if they can achieve that goal in the quarterfinals.

Group F of the quarterfinals will feature Japan and India, the first and second place finishers in Group B, and China and Kazakhstan, the first and second place finishers in Group D. The two teams will face off against each other.
